Your 401(k) Balance Isn’t the Whole Story

The number on your statement tells you what you’ve saved. It doesn’t tell you what you can spend.

Hello, my dear reader,

Let me start with a number that feels like an answer…

$500,000 in a 401(k). It sounds like a finish line — proof that you’re ready. But here’s the quiet truth: you could have $500,000 in your 401(k) and still not know how much retirement income it can actually provide.

Because a balance is not a plan. It’s a starting point.

The reason is something most retirement conversations skip: a 401(k) has two very different jobs. The first is accumulation — building the balance over your working years. The second is distribution — turning that balance into income you can actually live on. And the second job follows entirely different rules than the first.

Taxes are the biggest reason why. Money in a Traditional 401(k) is generally taxed when you withdraw it — which means part of that balance was never entirely yours to spend. How much reaches your life depends on when you take withdrawals, how they interact with Social Security and your other income, and what your spending actually looks like. Two people with the exact same $500,000 can end up with very different outcomes — based not on the number, but on the strategy around it.

This is also why the structure of your 401(k) matters as much as the size. Roth 401(k) money, for instance, sits in a different tax bucket entirely — qualified Roth distributions can generally come out tax-free, unlike withdrawals from pre-tax contributions. Same statement, very different tax lives.

So as retirement approaches, the balance is the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it:

“$500,000 isn’t a retirement plan. It’s a starting point for a retirement-income conversation.”

The goal was never simply to accumulate the largest number possible.

It’s to understand how that money will actually hold up the life you want to live.

Always with you, Pri ✨
