The Tax Decision You Make Today Can Affect Your Retirement Years From Now

A tax return tells you what already happened. Tax planning decides what happens next.

Hi, Pri here,

Most people think about taxes exactly once a year…

Somewhere around spring, the documents come out, the return gets filed, and the subject is closed until next year. For most of life, that rhythm is fine. But as retirement approaches, retirement planning can’t afford to think about taxes only once a year.

Here’s a distinction that changes everything: tax preparation is not the same as tax planning.

Tax preparation looks backward — it reports what already happened. Tax planning looks forward — it makes decisions before the year ends, while there’s still room to shape the outcome. One records the story. The other helps write it.

And in the years approaching retirement, that forward look matters more than most people realize. Decisions you make now — how you split contributions between Traditional (pre-tax) and Roth, whether a year of lower income opens a window to evaluate a Roth conversion, how you think about future taxable income rather than only this year’s bill — can quietly shape the taxes you’ll pay for years, even decades.

There’s a reason this gets overlooked. A conversion, for example, creates taxable income today on amounts that were never taxed before — which can feel like the wrong direction until you consider what it may prevent later. And future RMDs — required minimum distributions, which generally begin at age 73 for applicable traditional accounts — can push taxable income higher precisely when you have the least flexibility to manage it.

None of this is about doing something dramatic. It’s about looking forward instead of only back:

“A tax return tells you what happened. Tax planning helps you decide what happens next.”

The most valuable tax conversation of your life may not happen when the return is filed.

It may happen quietly, months before — while you still have choices to make.

With intention, Pri ✨
