What If Your Retirement Plan Works on Paper… But Not in Real Life?

A plan that only works on a spreadsheet was built for a life no one actually lives.

Hello, my dear reader,

There’s a difference between numbers that look good and a plan that actually fits…

On paper, retirement can seem beautifully solved. The projections line up, the totals are reassuring, the spreadsheet says yes. And then real life arrives — with all the texture the spreadsheet never accounted for.

Because a real retirement isn’t lived in numbers. It’s lived in days. And days come with things a projection tends to flatten: the lifestyle you actually want, not the modest one that makes the math easy. Healthcare, which rarely asks permission. The very real chance of living longer than expected. Family who may come to need you. The unexpected expense that arrives without warning. And the deeply personal question of when and how you even want to step back.

A plan that ignores those isn’t wrong, exactly. It’s just built for someone who doesn’t exist.

This is why retirement planning was never really about reaching a single number or assembling the perfect portfolio. A good plan has to answer more than “How much do I have?” It has to help answer “How do I want to live?”

So as you look at your own plan, I invite you to hold it up against your actual life:

“Does my plan work for a spreadsheet — or for the life I actually intend to live?”

The numbers matter. They always will.

But a retirement plan only truly works when it fits the person who has to live inside it.

With clarity, Pri ✨
