Tax Planning Isn’t Just for Tax Season

By the time the forms come out, the year is already written. Planning happens while the pen is still in your hand.

Hello, my dear reader,

Let me point out something most people never notice about taxes…

By the time you’re sitting down to file your taxes, some of your biggest tax decisions may already be behind you.

This is the difference between two things that sound alike but aren’t: tax preparation and tax planning. Preparation is what happens in the spring — gathering documents, filling in forms, reporting what already took place. It looks backward. Planning looks forward. It happens across the year, while there’s still time to shape the outcome the forms will eventually record.

And the list of decisions that can only be made before the year ends is longer than most people realize. When and how much you put into retirement accounts. Whether a lower-income year opens a window to evaluate a Roth conversion. The timing of income — whether a bonus, a sale, or a withdrawal lands in this year or the next. Charitable giving, and how it’s structured. Capital gains, and when they’re realized. And the quiet, longer question underneath all of it: the difference between paying taxes now and potentially paying them later.

Here’s what ties these together: once December 31 passes, most of these doors close. You can still report what happened, but you can no longer change it. Which is why the most valuable tax work often happens in the quiet months when taxes are the last thing on anyone’s mind.

So rather than waiting for the deadline to tell you what you owe, I invite you to ask, while you still can:

“Which decisions could still shape my tax situation this year — before the deadline decides it for me?”

Tax preparation looks backward. Tax planning looks forward.

The goal isn’t simply to find out how much you owe. It’s to understand which decisions affect that number while you can still make them.

With clarity, Pri ✨
